A Medical Student with a story to tell...

20th March 2019. Year 9 Alumni assembly.

Ao-Hin Tang is an ex-student with a story to tell!  Having taken part in our Futures Convention in October, talking to Year 11 students about routes into Medicine, we asked Ao-Hin to come into school to share his story with our Year 9 students.

From the moment he started the students were spellbound. His story began with the setback he experienced in Year 10 when, through serious illness, it appeared that he would be unable to continue his educational studies.

One of the key messages that emerged from his talk was a clear sense of Ao-Hin’s resilience. At every point in his journey he had been determined to work hard, despite facing a number of difficult circumstances. At the end of Year 11 he achieved an excellent set of GCSE results. This enabled him to access A Level courses at Beauchamp College where, once again, he faced adversity due to further illness. Though the odds were against him, he managed to achieve fantastic A Level results. Disappointingly however, he failed to gain a place at University to study Medicine.

Ao-Hin’s speech was truly inspirational. He revealed that because he had been so determined to work hard and pursue his dreams, he was finally in a position, two years ago, to transfer on to his dream course: Medicine.

Ao-Hin’s talk was clearly enjoyed by students and staff alike and he had a crowd of students around him at the end of the assembly eager to find out more about his route into his dream degree and career. Without doubt, the students understood the message behind Ao-Hin’s talk: if you work hard and don’t give up, no matter what life throws at you, you’ll give yourself the best chance of fulfilling your dreams!
