Beaumont Leys

Pupil Librarian of the Year Award 2019

Georgina Shajan, a Year 11 student, was entered for the Pupil Library Assistant of the Year 2019 Award by the school’s librarian in the autumn term 2018.  In December 2018 the school was informed that Georgina had been shortlisted as one of the seven finalists for the award.  Georgina was chosen out of hundreds of applicants.

Georgina was then given three tasks to complete before the 14th January 2019.  These were:

  • Design a T-Shirt to promote reading.
  • Write to your MP and ask them to join the Supporting School Libraries Group and the cross party parliamentary Libraries group.
  • She was given a fictitious task to spend £500 given to her by the school governors to promote reading.

On Friday 22nd March Georgina, a friend, her form tutor Mr Ryder and Mrs Greenough, the school librarian, travelled to London for the Award presentation.  The award ceremony was held at Penguin Random House on the Strand.  There were lots of authors and special guests present.  Georgina was paired with author Anthony McGowan who praised Georgina for all the hard work and positive contributions she has made as a pupil librarian. All the finalists were given books by the guest authors and Penguin publishers – Georgina went home with four bags of books!

Georgina said “it was a wonderful opportunity to meet a wide range of successful authors and the other student librarians who were also nominated for the award across the country.”

Georgina’s dedication and hard work in the Beaumont Leys School library from Year 8 to Year 11 has been recognised. Georgina has been an outstanding pupil librarian.
