Masterclass & Careers Conference - The Space Centre

21st June & 9th July 2018 – Year 10 Triple Scientists

A small group of year 10 students have recently had the opportunity to attend a two day Masterclass and Careers Conference at the National Space Academy.

Explore Space and the Universe Masterclass  On Thursday 21st June students took part in a Masterclass where they used their GCSE science and maths skills to explore the universe and find solutions to the engineering challenges of getting humans into space.  They undertook a range of problem solving activities using complex calculations which truly stretched them academically.  Rounding the day off, the students had the chance to watch the Planetarium show “We Are Stars” and to quote Mrs Simpson (Science Lead) who accompanied our students it was “Amazeballs!”

‘Students enjoyed the whole experience and although it was challenging at times they felt that they gained a really good insight into this industry and how it related to their academic studies.’ Jenny Simpson (Science teacher)

Space & Engineering Industry Careers Conference On Monday 9th July our students returned to the Space Centre to take part in a Careers Conference, where they listened to a range of talks about the different types of employment available within the Space and Engineering industries.  A keynote speech by Dr Suzanne Imber set the tone for the day – with plenty of drive and ambition you can achieve your dreams.  Always challenging herself, and never afraid to fail, Suzi is an Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester where she studies space weather.  In her free time she has constantly pushed herself, playing team sports for 14 years before becoming an elite rower and then deciding to climb mountains!  This led her to take part in the BBC2 series entitled “Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?” of which she was the winner.  Her advice (and the advice of many of the other speakers) was to always challenge yourself and what you do outside of your studies, is just as important and can lead you to unexpected opportunities.

Students felt that both days were “inspiring”, “helped me to consider my future” and “taught me how to get into the space industry”.
